The 5 Terpenes Every Cannabis Connoisseur Should Know

If you’re a cannabis connoisseur, you’ve probably heard about terpenes. You may have also heard the popular stoner phrase: “It’s all about the terps, bro.”

If you’re not familiar with the term, “terpenes are essential oils. All plants have them, affecting how things smell. When it comes to cannabis, they play a key role in one’s mental and physical experience of certain strains.

So far, there have been more than 140 terpenes identified in cannabis. Of those, 17 have been discovered to be the most common. Of those 17, five are most prevalent across the board:

Beta-Caryophyllene:

Beta-Caryophyllene (commonly referred to as just “caryophyllene”), is a terpene best known for its anti-inflammatory and stress-relieving properties. Some popular strains that contain higher than average levels of beta-caryophyllene are: Chemdog, Gelato, Girl Scout Cookies, Master Kush, Original Glue, Purple Punch, Sour Diesel.

What makes beta-caryophyllene a unique terpene is its ability to bind to CB2 receptors. It’s the only known terpene to also act as a cannabinoid and activate our endocannabinoid system (ECS).

This terpene is also found in black pepper, cinnamon, and clove. Its scent is fairly easy to detect, giving the above cannabis strains their spicy, biting aroma.

This terpene is also found in lemon, orange and juniper. It gives off a strong citrus scent, though not every cannabis strain with limonene smells as such. The only way to know for sure a strain is dominant in limonene is by its lab results.

Linalool is a fast-metabolized terpene. It doesn’t accumulate or get stored in fatty tissues, the way other cannabinoids do. For this reason, this makes it one of the safest essential oils across all plants.

Therapeutically, linalool is an anticonvulsant and muscle relaxer. Studies have shown that in cannabis, it helps block excitatory brain chemicals (like glutamate and acetylcholine). Strains high in linalool tend to work best for patients with epilepsy and Alzheimers.

This terpene is also found in lavender, sage, and spearmint. In scent, linalool is closest to and most recognizable as lavender.
